What to read when you are anxious

June 5, 2026 · 6 min read

Anxiety is sneaky. It rarely arrives announcing itself; it slips in as a tight chest before a meeting, a mind that won't settle at 2am, a vague sense that something is about to go wrong. When you're in it, even opening a Bible can feel like one more task. So here is a short, low-effort list — the passages I keep returning to, and a few quieter reframes for when the words of scripture feel too big.

1. Psalm 23

The most over-quoted psalm in history, and the most powerful for a reason. You do not have to manage the green pastures or the still waters. The shepherd is doing that. Your only job is to be led.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."

Psalm 23:2–3

2. Matthew 6:34

Jesus's most practical line about anxiety: 'Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.' Notice what he does not say — he does not say tomorrow has no trouble. He says today's portion is enough for today.

3. Philippians 4:6–7

Paul wrote this from prison, which is worth remembering. He is not promising the absence of difficulty. He is promising a peace that 'transcends understanding' — the kind that does not depend on circumstances changing.

4. 1 Peter 5:7

'Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.' The verb 'cast' is forceful — not 'place gently' but 'throw'. Anxiety isn't something to manage politely. It's something to hand off.

And if scripture feels too heavy today

Some days you need permission to read something smaller. Three reframes that often help:

"You don't have to carry tomorrow on tonight's shoulders."

"Anxiety is the mind rehearsing a future that has not arrived."

"Breathe. You have survived 100% of your hardest days."

If your anxiety is persistent, please speak to a doctor or a counsellor. A good verse can comfort; a trained professional can help in ways an app cannot.
